Introduction

This is a toddler picture book with the theme of “Finding Dots.”
(Selected for the 10th Picture Book Publishing Award, Baby and Educational Picture Book category, Japan)

After my child was born, I began choosing picture books that I found cute or had unique stories to read to him. However, I quickly realized that he had no interest in them. After several attempts, I deeply understood that for infants, picture books are interactive books that need to be read aloud. They must be engaging, with simple illustrations, bright and vibrant colors, shorter text, and a strong sense of rhythm while reading. Throughout my journey of creating picture books, I focused on drawing what I wanted and pursued the aesthetics and details of the illustrations, without considering how the readers would feel while reading them. It was only when I had a child and picture books went from being something to look at to something that needed to be read aloud that I truly understood the meaning of considering the reader’s experience in creating picture books.

Therefore, when creating this picture book, I abandoned my previous style and habits. I deliberately used very simple lines and colors, making the main character on each page stand out prominently. I removed unnecessary elements from the illustrations and imagined what kind of illustrations and story content (playfulness) would make my child happy when I read the story to him. With these thoughts in mind, I completed this work.
